Our Story
Meet Lillie
Lillie is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of Charleston Trident Technical College. The Ohio native is a proud wife, mother, grandmother, and U.S. Army Veteran.
Her desire to be a business owner is rooted in childhood memories: there was a bakery in her neighborhood that she used to frequent before and after school. She was impressed by the uniform the chefs wore (especially their hats) and enjoyed the sense of community she felt during every visit. The bakery was a special part of the neighborhood, and the bakers themselves were considered friends.
That experience inspired Lillie to start her own bakery. She wanted to recreate that sense of community that was so integral to her childhood, and to create a space for the neighborhood folks to gather and have a nice cup of coffee and good conversation while creating wonderful memories and eating delicious sweets that nourish the soul.
What's in a Name?
The name Mae’s Sweets with Soul is a tribute to three phenomenal women, all with the middle name Mae: Lillie’s grandmother and namesake, Lillie Mae, Lillie’s mother Ruby Mae, and Lillie’s great-grandmother, Ida Mae.
Ruby Mae, Lillie Mae, and Ida Mae are responsible for everything that Lillie is, and everything she dreams to be. The heart and soul of these extraordinary women give Lillie the hope and courage needed to pursue the kind of greatness that will inspire future generations.
